Some songs are relatively straightforward: they start in one place and explore that patch of musical ground for a while, and then they end. Most songs are like that, in fact, and it works well. But there are other songs that start in one place musically, then go somewhere else, then somewhere else after that, etc. It's harder to pull off, and the hardest thing of all is to have the changes so seamless that a casual listener never thinks about how many times the song is changing.
